Civil Disobedience to Stop Executions
Demonstrations and Arrests in Raleigh, North Carolina

On August 17 and 18, 2006, members of a North Carolina affinity group planned and carried out an attempt to resist the execution of Samuel "Sammy" Flippen. After Governor Michael Easley denied clemency to Flippen shortly after midnight, opponents of the death penalty attempted to process down the Central Prison driveway in order to stop the execution. The group was met my a line of Prison Emergency Response Team (PERT) members and were then quickly arrested by State Capital Police. The four arrested were held in a county jail on a $5000 bond.
