Stay of Executions in North Carolina
Courtroom Scenes from Wake County Superior Court
January 25, 2007

At 10:45 a.m. on January 25, 2007, Senior Resident Judge Donald W. Stephens of Wake County Superior Court, stayed two North Carolina executions due to conflicts with the involvement of medical physicians. Marcus Robinson was scheduled to die by lethal injection the next morning, while James Edward Thomas was to be executed Feb. 2. The prisoners' lawyers argued that the N.C. Medical Board's ruling didn't ensure their clients' executions would meet constitutional safeguards. The following photographs are courtroom scenes during the ruling and immediately following.
